Big Springs Lookout Tower Hike by Johnny Sacks Cabin

How far: from Rexburg – 64.2 miles (to the trail head)

What to do:

- Camp

- Johnny Sack’s Cabin—open mid-June to mid-September

- Big Springs—the beginning of Henry’s Fork River

- Toss breadcrumbs at Big Springs to feed the fish and get a better look at them (fishing not allowed)

- Hike to the lookout tower (1.5 miles long)

How much time will I spend there: on average, it takes about 30 min to hike to the tower and 30 min to get back to the parking lot.

What to bring:

- Water

- Snacks (trail mix, granola bars, dried fruit, etc.)

- Good pair of tennis shoes (because the hike is easy, hiking boots aren’t necessary)

- Camera to take some cool pictures!

- A permanent marker to write your name at the top of the tower!

Best time to go: May to October

Things to know: The lookout tower was used to scope out forest fires. Now it is a fun, short, easy hike you can do with your friends and family and enjoy the beautiful scenery of eastern Idaho. The hike is a little steep in the beginning, you gain about 450 ft. of elevation in total once you have reached the tower. Be very careful if you attempt to climb the tower. It is very old and many of the steps have broken.
